All of these boards were LCD/LED live screens with the logos and ads changing regularly. It is very iconic, but really it's only a couple hundred yards of the city.

After a couple of days in Rochester with Mom, Al, and Shani- Liz, Mom, and I went to New York for New Year's Eve, which some of you probably know as My Birthday. One of my favorite things about NYC is the subway. OMG- San Francisco sucks so bad wrt public transportation. I actually thought it was ok, now I know it is really really very sad and pathetic.

Up at the lake house Dad and Meg showed Liz and I the latest improvements to the house. It is amazing the amount of restoration done. I helped with some of it, but these finishing touches are in perfect taste. Bravo guys!

This is a glass work that was as the AIC. They had a whole room of these millefiori which means many flowers.

This is the Lake House on Port Huron. My Dad bought this place back in the early '90s, and it was in pretty rough shape. He and I (along with crews of dudes) took to working on it during the summers and weekends. I personally cleaned the outside brick with power washers and corrosive chemicals. Now, it is almost fully restored with beautiful features inside. Liz and I are going to try to make some ceramics for the kitchen.

This bottle is actually the main reason Liz and I wanted to go to the AIC. We've both been there multiple times, but we hadn't seen this piece. Miyamura is one of a few ceramic artists who have been trying to recreate a glaze from the Japanese historical collection. Check him out if you get a chance.

This is Tammy, the raku master. She lives up in Santa Rosa on a mountainous chunk of land. It is a requisite that your car have AWD to go up the driveway. The red hot pots go into those trash cans full of newspaper and pick up all sorts of carbon. I have more ceramics pics, but there's still the rest of Chi/MI/NYC to get through, so I'll be spicing these raku images in as I go.

I got a lightbox for Christmas and this is the first chance I've had to use it.
I've actually found that I need to bump up the f-number quite a bit. This needed to be cropped but I'm lazy.

This is a raku piece that where I burned horsehair on the outside of it to make the black lines. More coming.

We got up into the upper floors of Alcatraz and that's where they kept the people who had to be entirely separated from the population. These were really for the instigators. This is also where the health care was performed.

When we got to Alcatraz it was later in the day, so the wind was just starting to kick up and bring in some fog. We still got plenty of time in the sun, so it worked out nicely. This is a view up the guards quarters where the families lived.

I have really gotten into ceramics as of late. It's been interesting and fun. I've always enjoyed working w/ my hands and material science is more or less what I studied in school, so the two go together nicely. This is a pit fired piece done by an artist that Liz and I know.

In case you noticed, I've been falling behind on my daily photos. It is a much more difficult grind than I ever imagined. It has been good, and I managed to make it 1 yr. 3 months without missing a "day". Week after next I'm going to Texas/N. Mexico, Grand Canyon, and home on a road trip with Liz to get a new car. I'm certain that I will be collecting many wonderful pictures and memories along the way. SO, I've decided to make a break in the blog, I will be taking a month off from it (April) and will be returning with fresh pictures from my trip and whatever else I get from now 'til then. I will finish off March sometime soon, and be leaving April alone. I also recently aquired an old 1959 Ricoh medium format camera (thanks Dembski's/Farnsworths) which shot it's first roll on Saturday (4-3-10). I hope I don't lose to many of my viewers (whomever you may be).

Even though this is published on 4-1, it's not a joke, just seemed appropriate.

An Abstraction

{Liz started asking me about this picture, so I thought some details were in order. First, it is a SEM picture (from the bottom you can see it was done at 0.8keV, 25x mag (hella low btw), and at a working distance of 15mm). This is not a normal image, meaning the SEM doesn't normally do this, and it is a weird quirk of the physics of the thing. I will let you ponder how I did this, and get back with more info later. Oh and click on it b/c the full version is much crispier.}
